A fortified outpost of London - Barbican
Barbican - Region Background and Development
The Barbican is located in the East District of London, in the centre of the City of London, close to Old Street, Shoreditch and Bank Station. The Barbican Estate is a large building area located in this area. It is one of the representative buildings of British Brutalism. The high floors are residential buildings, and there is a pool in the middle of the base.
The location of the Barbican Estate was originally one of the ancient city gates of the City of London, but it was heavily bombed in World War II, and it was not until 1957 that residential buildings began to be built. Its design concept is to create an urban settlement with its own schools, churches, etc., so in the entire building complex, in addition to high-rise residential buildings, schools, museums, conservatories, libraries, art galleries, etc. are also planned. The entire project was completed in 1982 and was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II!
In 2001, the British Minister of Culture, Tessa Blackstone, announced that it would be classified as a Grade II Listed Building due to the overall scale, design and planning of the Barbican Estate.
